ANNUAL REPORT 2025

PROAS is a system that anticipates port operations by integrating meteo-ocean forecasts and  ship mooring models. It evaluates the environmental impact on the behavior of the vessel at berth and allows to foresee operational constraints and support decision making

PROAS (Port Risk Optimized Advanced System) aims to develop an advanced system for predicting ship-infrastructure operability to estimate the safety and efficiency of port operations through the integration of meteo-ocean forecasts, port call planning and numerical evaluation of the dynamic response of ship mooring.

1. CHALLENGE

Port operations depend on multiple environmental and operational factors. However, conventional management methods are often based on simple thresholds of meteorological or oceanographic variables (wave height, wind, etc.), which do not necessarily reflect the actual response of ship mooring. The challenge is to transform the environmental and operational information into operational indicators that explicitly consider the dynamics of the ship mooring infrastructure system.

2. SOLUTION

PROAS integrates predictions of the physical environment (waves, wind, currents) with advanced numerical models that simulate the dynamic response of ship mooring at different berths. These models allow estimating ship motions (6 degrees of freedom), mooring and fender stresses, as well as operational indicators associated with each type of port operation.

The platform combines these results with the planning of scales and planned operations to generate predictive indicators of safety and operational efficiency, facilitating early decision making.

3. RESULTS

The project has enabled the development of a predictive system capable of assessing the operability of vessels at different berths in the port under different environmental conditions. The results include analytical tools to anticipate possible operational limitations, improve the planning of port operations and increase safety by quantitatively assessing the dynamic response of ship mooring.
