Course on climate resilient infrastructures of the Professional Association of Civil Engineers
IHCantabria staff has co-directed and taught a course organized by the Professional Association of Civil Engineers.
1. CHALLENGE
The urgent need to adapt infrastructures and public works to climate change, which threatens the safety and functionality of conventional structures, requires the qualification of civil engineering professionals in the analysis, planning and management of infrastructures that are resilient to the effects of extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent as a result of the dynamics of global warming.
2. SOLUTION
The Professional Association of Civil Engineers offered a specialized course in April and May 2025, focused on basic aspects that enable the planning, design, construction and operation of climate-resilient infrastructures, to train its members in both the public and private sectors.
For this purpose, it has counted with the participation of the Research Director and the Head of the Climate Risk, Adaptation and Resilience Group of IHCantabria, who acted as co-director of the course and professor, respectively.
3. RESULTS
The course introduced the most current knowledge on climate change, as well as the specific problems in the field of civil engineering and the socio-economic and administrative contexts. Thirty professionals have received training that will enable them to:
- Structure an analysis of risks derived from climate change in the Spanish territory, or in any type of infrastructure.
- Know the conceptual framework of adaptation, as well as the different steps that lead to the implementation of an adaptation plan in any sectoral area of the profession.
- Make a first approach to specific particularities of each sector, including a thematic module on coasts, taught by IHCantabria.
