New developments to strengthen our lifelong learning offer through university microcredentials
1. CHALLENGE
The challenge undertaken by the University of Cantabria to implement the “Recommendation for a European approach to microcredentials for lifelong learning and employability” (Council of Europe, 2022) requires a constant effort on the part of the research institutes to contribute to the continuous, specialized, flexible and modular learning of professionals. This is a challenge and, at the same time, an opportunity for knowledge transfer.
2. SOLUTION
IHCantabria enriches every year its ECCE-IH Capacity Building Program for technical specialization, designed to address current challenges within the marine and coastal environment, combining scientific rigor with immediate practical application. In 2025 we added to the two microcredentials already available in our catalog (ADAPTABLUES and TRASMARES) a new microcredential leading to a University of Cantabria’s degree on Water Quality in Port Areas: ROM 5.1. IHCantabria is actively seeking funding to promote access to knowledge for students interested in its training offer.
3. RESULTS
In 2025, we delivered new editions of the TRASMARES and ADAPTABLUES university microcredentials and launched the new ROM 5.1 microcredential, which had 29 students in 2025.
Thanks to the successive calls of the MicroCreds Plan of the Ministry of Universities to promote microcredentials in public universities and the Santander-Microcredentials scholarship program of the Santander Bank, 61 students received scholarships and successfully completed one of our three university microcredentials, receiving a degree from the University of Cantabria.
